MARIA MAZORRA has been dancing Sevillanas and playing the castanets since she was a young girl. Born in Cuba to a Spanish family, flamenco music and dance were part of her early life. At the age of six, she began formal classes with El Sevillanito. Immigrating to NYC in 1966, she continued to study with Mariquita Flores and later trained at the Harkness Ballet School where Roberto Bobby Lorca was the flamenco instructor. Lorca was instrumental in Maria's professional development and became Maria's dance partner later in her career. In the 1970s, flamenco's golden age in NYC, Maria danced in tablaos, restaurants and venues alongside artists such as Azucena, Liliana Morales, Manolo Pasos, and Paco Juanas. Working with the Puerto Rican Dance Theater, Maria performed an homage to Carmen Amaya in 1976.
